Bird Finder
Birding News has a number of ways in which you can search for bird sightings. They can be restricted by bird, or bird family, to area, dates, times, maturity, sex and rarity, and any combination of the above. More


Bird Locations
All bird spottings that are posted can be sorted and displayed on a map for easy access to location data. This shows you quickly and easily what's close to you, whats clumped together, and what's too far to travel to.

 
Population

Population Status explanation
We have used the same information on the status of birds as is published on the BTO website. The explanation of how they worked out the status of each bird can be found here.

Here are some quick point on how the current status have been arrived at.

Red Listing Criteria
  Globally Threatened
  Historical population decline in UK during 1800-1995
  Rapid (50% or greater) decline in UK breeding population over last 25 years
  Rapid (50% or greater) contraction of UK breeding range over last 25 years

 

Additional Amber Listing Criteria
  Historical population decline during 1800–1995, but recovering; population size has more than doubled over last 25 years
  Moderate (25-49%) decline in UK breeding population over last 25 years
  Moderate (25-49%) contraction of UK breeding range over last 25 years
  Species with unfavourable conservation status in Europe
(SPEC = Species of European Conservation Concern)
  Five-year mean of 1-300 breeding pairs in UK
  At least 50% of UK breeding population in 10 or fewer sites, but not rare breeders
  At least 50% of UK non-breeding population in 10 or fewer sites
  At least 20% of European breeding population in UK
  At least 20% of NW European (wildfowl), East Atlantic Flyway (waders) or European (others) non-breeding populations in UK
